The second general method of synthesis employed is an extension of the olefin oxide method used previously to prepare 9, lO-cyclohexenophenanthrene6 and with limited success in the synthesis of~ henanthrene.~ A Grignard reagent prepared from 2- iodobiphenyl was treated with a suitable aldehyde and the resulting carbinol (IV) dehydrated with potassium bisulfate.
