Abstract The reaction between compounds of the type [CH 2 CH (CH 2) n](CH 3) 2 SiCH 2 Cl and sodium has been studied. Intermediacy of the corresponding carbene (or carbenoid reagent) is proposed and evidence for intramolecular carbene addition to the olefinic linkage is presented in the case where n= 0, 2 and 3.
