The synthesis and characterization of chlorin-sensitized, near-infrared-emitting lanthanide (Nd or Yb) complexes is described. Chlorin absorption could be tuned by variation of the substitution pattern (ie one or two meso-aryl substituents) and metalation state (ie free base or zinc chelate) of the macrocycle. Excitation via the chlorin antenna afforded lanthanide- centered emission in the near IR region of the spectrum from both Nd and Yb complexes.
