Abstract: Rate data for the quaternization reactions of various triarylphosphines with benzyl chloride, benzyl bromide, and n-butyl chloride are presented. There are two particularly striking effects.(1) The presence of an o-methoxy group in the phosphine causes a marked acceleration of the reaction.(2) The difference in the rates of reaction of a given triarylphosphine with benzyl chloride and n-butyl chloride is less than 20, probably the ...
