Alcohols and thiols were converted into alkyl chlorides, carboxylic acids were converted into acid chlorides, and mixtures of carboxylic acids and amines were converted into amides by reaction with carbon tetrachloride and 1% cross-linked polystyrenes containing phosphine residues.
