Steric factors appear to control the course of aromatic ring halogenation of mt-butylphenol according to the following sequence: 6> 4> 2. Iodine would not react at the positions adjacent to the t-butyl group. Bromine would not substitute at the position between the hydroxyl and t-butyl groups.
