Abstract Bromine addition to o-methylselenocinnamic acid, followed by pyridine action, leads to the heterocyclic compound: benzo (b) selenophene 2-carboxylic acid. This new way is a very general one. Every styrene, when having selenoether in ortho position and H, COOH, or COOAlk in β, reacts in the same conditions to give benzo (b) selenophene and derivatives with good yields.
