Abstract: A new type of intercalator, 1, and its nonintercalating analogue, 2, are both twisted about the torsional bonds joining the aromatic rings. Spectroscopic methods and MM2 calculations indicate that the twist for 2 is significantly greater than for 1 (48O versus 25'from MM2) in solution.
