A similar method has recently been described for the preparation of phenyl-3-thienylglycolic acid. I4 The 3-mercaptopiperidines were obtained by the condensation of the 3-chloro derivatives with thioacetic acid in refluxing isopropyl alcohol followed by a mild alkaline hydrolysis of the thioacetates and a continuous ether extraction of the neutral solution.
