Conclusions The well-known rapid hydrolysis of amic acids in acidic solution involves a transacylation reaction, which potentially competes initially with a dehydration reaction leading to formation of an imide. The pseudoequilibrium between amic acid and imide is drained by the conversion of the amic acid to the amine and dicarboxylic acid via the anhydride.
