Abstract: Examination of the isotropic absorption and circular dichroism spectra of para- substituted and 3, 5-disubstituted a-phenyl-and a-benzylethylamines and their hydrochlorides indicates that the sign of the'Lb Cotton effects (CEs) of the benzene chromophore of the unsubstituted amines and amine hydrochlorides is determined by vibronic borrowing from the'Bb-allowed transition.
