RECEIVED LfAY 20, 1958-1 novel method has been discovered for the preparation of nitrate esters from alkyl chloroformates by treatment with silver nitrate under very mild conditions. By this method, a stereoselective synthesis of a nitrate ester is achieved in which the bond on the carbon atom adjacent to the nitrate ester group remains essentially intact.
