A one-step synthesis of dimethyl A'-cycloalkene-1, 2-dicarboxylates (1)(cyclobutene to cycloheptene) from the corresponding dimethyl ala'-dibromoalkanedicarboxylates is given. While dimethyl Akyclopropene-l, 2-dicarboxylate (la) is believed produced from the reaction of dimethyl a+'-dibromoglutarate (2a) and potassium tert-butoxide, cis addition of an alcohol to la proceeds to yield the dimethyl l-alkoxycyclopropane-cis-1, 2-dicarboxylates 4 and 5. ...
