Abstract: Quenching the enolates of esters and ketones with dimethyl disulfide or diphenyl disulfide produces the corresponding a-sulfenylated products. The regio-and chemospecificity of these reactions are defined. Oxidation to the sulfoxide followed by thermolysis leads smoothly to the@ unsaturated systems.
