Abstract Ultraviolet photolysis of 3, 4-dimethoxybenzonitrile (Ia) and 3, 4- dimethoxyacetophenone (IIa) in the presence of the hydroxide or cyanide anion leads to nucleophilic displacement of either the para or the meta methoxy substituent.
