Abstract: The ultraviolet absorption spectra of m-and p-aminophenyltrimethylammonhm ions, of m-and p-trifluoromethylaniline, and of p-and y-aminopyridine have been compared with that of aniline; the results sug-gest that the “inductive” substituent CF, operates mainly by a field effect rather than by a r-inductive effect.
