Treatment of the lithium derivative of orcinol dimethyl ether with N- methylformanilide produced orsellinaldehyde dimethyl ether, which was converted to the corresponding 2, 6-dimethoxy-4-methylcinnamic acid by means of malonic acid and pyridine.
