Abstract Base-catalysed esterification of alkanethiols with formic acid/acetic anhydride reaction mixtures (FAM 2) affords pure thiolformates. The method for the preparation of pure aryl thiolformates 3 could not be applied satisfactorily to alkyl thiolformates. Change of reaction temperature and amount of catalyst resulted in the desired improvements.
