Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films provide ordered films of organic substrates and Ringsdorfl has shown that when these substrates possess in-chain alkenyl groups, polymerisation occurs upon UV irradiation. Such behaviour is not, of course, characteristic of such substrates in liquid solution, in melts or crystals.
