Abstract: This paper addresses the question of whether hydrocarbon 10, a dibenzo derivative of 1, 6-methano [lOIannulene, retains the [IOIannulene ring in 10a or exists as the valence tautomer lob, a double norcaradiene. A rational synthesis of 10b has been achieved in eight steps from trans-1, 2-diphenyl-1, 2-cyclopropanedicarboxylic acid.
