Direct photoamination of phenanthrene, 9-methoxyphenanthrene, anthracene, naphthalene, and several substituted naphthalenes with ammonia or primary amines in the presence of m- dicyanobenzene occurs to give aminated dihydroarenes in fairly good yields. m- Dimethoxybenzene and biphenyl are photoaminated in lower yields.
