Introduction oQuinone methides are reactive intermediates frequently used in organic synthesis. 13 They have been generated by thermal elimination of phenol Mannich bases (1; Y= NRZ),~ o-(a-hydroxalky1)-(1; Y= OH) or o-(a-methoxyalky1) phenols (1; Y= OR),'-14 by dehydrohalogenation of o-(chloromethy1) phenols (1; Y= C1), 16J6 by desilylation of disilylated o-hydroxybenzyl alcohols (1; Y= OSiMe3), 17 and by oxidation of o- ...
