The structure (Fig. 1, arbitrary numbering) shows an essentially planar system, as indicated by the torsional angles C3---C4 N1--C7 and C5--C4---NI--C8 in Table 1. This might be expected to reflect the usual conjugation between an amino lone pair and an aromatic ring. However, the C4--N1 bond length of 1.412 (3)~, seems too long for a standard Caryl--N--(Csp3)2 sub- structure (typically 1.371 ,~,) (Allen et al., 1987).
