Rccausc of thoir hygroscopic naturc, the monoesters wcre difficult to obtain in an analytically pure state. I0 Thus, in many cases spectral data and subscyucnt characterization of tho cyclizcd products wcrc relied upon for structuro proofs. The infrared spectra wcrc particularly instructive, since 2 cxhibits a st'rong band at 1322 cm-l (C= N strctch) which shifts to 1340- 1380 cm-I in thc monocstcrs."
