Several new derivatives of strychnine substituted at positions C2 and C3 of the aromatic ring have been prepared in order to convert strychnine into brucine. This goal was attained by means of a double oxidation process with Fremy salt (potassium nitrosodisulphonate) on strychnic acid and 2-hydroxy-strychnine, and final methylation of 2, 3-dihydroxystrychnine into brucine.
