Abstract The reaction of NaCN with 2-methoxy-4-formyl-o-quinol acetate (1) and 2-methoxy- 5-formyl-o-quinol acetate (2) differs fundamentally from that with the corresponding dimethyl substituted quinol acetates. With 1 the type of reaction products formed depends to a great extent on the solvent used: in methanol 1 yields 3-hydroxy-4-cyano-benzoic acid methylester, in DMF, however, 2-cyano-3-methoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde.
