Miescher and co-workers have describedaa-c the synthesis of “doisynolic acid”(I) and several structurally related, highly estrogenic acids. Previous work in our lab~ ratories,~ that had as its objective the total synthesis of estrone from 3-methyl-4-carbethoxy-2- cyclohexenone (IV, Hagemann's ester) 4a. b led to an analog (11) of doisynolic acid that also exhibited a high order of estrogenic activity.
