Abstract An improved, efficient preparation of 2-(halomethyl) allyl carboxylates starting from diethyl bis (hydroxymethyl) malonate and hydrobromic acid is reported. The allylic halogen of 2-(chloromethyl) acrylate and 2-(bromomethyl) acrylate are readily exchanged during esterification.
