Summary: P-Alkyl-P, y-epoxy nitro compounds undergo the weak base catalyzed conversion to y-hydroxy-a-nitro olefins followed by isomerization of the resulting double bond and the subsequent Pd (0)-catalyzed allylic substitution of the hydroxy allylic nitro intermediates by PhSOzNa and piperidine in a single-pot to afford hydroxy sulfones and amines, respectively.
