It is well known that the cathodic reduction of phenacyl bromides in aprotic media leads in very good yields to the formation of 2, 4-diarylfurans.'This occurs via the cleavage of the carbon-bromine bond, giving an anion2p3 that adds to the carbonyl group of another molecule of substrate adsorbed on the surface of the electrode (mercury pool).
