Abstract Since the discovery of the phase transfer catalytic (PTC) techniques they have been applied for synthetic purposes in almost every conceivable type of displacement reactions. We recently required a ready access to symmetrical disulfides from the corresponding alkyl halides, and were surprised to find that no 2 RX→ R2S2 conversions under PTC conditions have been reported1.
