In the presence of certain dienes N-methylphthalimide undergoes a novel photochemical addition reaction to give benzazepinediones which corresponds to an addition of the diene across the C (0)-N bond of the imide. The reaction has some generality in that it occurs for selected dienes, alkenes, vinyl ethers, vinyl esters, and an allene.
