The preparation of 2-methylchromones from polyhydroxyacetophenones by the reaction of ohydroxyacetophenones with acetic anhydride and sodium acetate'is often unsatisfactory because of the formation of 4-methylcoumarin derivatives or of 3-acetyl-2-methyl-chromones which must be deacylated in a separate step.
