Irritable bowel syndrome is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain or discomfort in association with a change in bowel habit. 5-HT receptor modulators have been developed as IBS therapeutic agents and proved to be effective in the treatment of the disease.
