Abstract The electronic coupling via the cardo structure in polyfluorene (PFs) was investigated. The series of fluorene units alternatively having alkoxyphenyl as an electron- donating group (EDG) and/or alkyl benzoate as an electron-withdrawing group (EWG) at the cardo carbon were synthesized.
