Chemistry. The (E)-3-(4-0~ 0-4H-quinazolin-3-y1)-2-propenoic acids (5) were prepared as shown in Scheme I. The crucial intermediates required were the quinazolin-4 (3H)-ones (3) and the methyl ester of 3-chloro-2-propenoic acid. The substituted anthranilic acids (2) needed for the preparation of the quinazolin-4 (3H)-ones were prepared either by literature procedures or as described under Experimental Section.
