2-Alkoxy-3-bromotetrahydrofurans are cleaved by ethereal chloroalane solution exclusively at the endocyclic CO bond under formation of 4-alkoxy-3-bromo-1-butanols which are further hydrogenolysed at the C-Br bond and afford the corresponding 4-alkoxy-1-butanols. The cleavage of 2-alkoxy-3-bromotetrahydrofurans, as well as the cleavage of 2- alkoxytetrahydrofurans, is controlled by the decomposition of the acetal-chloroalane ...
