A survey of the literature concerning the acyloin reaction2 revealed only limited application to the synthesis of unsymmetrical a-ketols. Other reported methods for the preparation of compounds of this class frequently suffer from the disadvantage of requiring relatively inaccessible starting material~.~-~ The mixed acyloin reaction has previously been employed only by Baudartg in his synthesis of several unsaturated long-chain fatty acids ...
