The identification of a number of imidazole ribotides as intermediates in the biosynthesis of purine~?-~ has brought to light a hitherto unknown class of important natural compounds. These were obtained from bacteria or from mammalian enzymic reactions and have not heretofore been obtainable by chemical means.
