Abstract Spectrochemical properties of LnI 2 (Ln= Sm, Eu, Yb) prepared with lanthanoid metal and diiodoethane in THF were characterized by means of UV—Vis, fluorescence and ESR spectroscopy. A comparative investigation has also been made concerning LnI 3 (Ln= La Lu) and the Grignard-type compounds R Ln I (R= Et, Ph; Ln= Eu, Yb). LnI 2 (Ln= Sm, Eu, Yb) was also prepared from reaction of lanthanoid metal and iodine in THF.
