CORPORATION] of Various y-Valerolactone has been condensed with each of the isomeric xylenes, and the resulting 4-(dimethylpheny1)-pentanoic acids were cyclized to trimethyl-1- tetralones in good yield. Cyclization of 4-(2, 4-dimethylphenyl)-pentanoic acid using polyphosphoric acid was accompanied by a rearrangement resulting in 4, 6, 8-trimethyl-l- tetralone whereas cyclization of the corresponding acid chloride with stannic chloride ...
