A new series of 5-alkylmercapto derivatives of 2, 3-dimethoxy-1, 4-benzoquinones has been synthesized as potential antimetabolites of coenzyme Q. Within the series of 2, 3-dimethoxy- 5-n-octadecylmercapto-1, 4-benzoquinones, several 6-substituents (chloro, amino, n- octadecylmercapto, and methyl) provided potentially significant variation in oxidation- reduction potential of the new quinones.
