presence of a Grignard reagent. 2-Iodothianaphthene was prepared by the action of iodine on 2-thianaphthenyllithi~ m~; thianapb thene was converted directly to 3-iodothianaphthene by iodine and mercuric oxide. The structures of both isomers were confirmed by carbonation of the Grignard reagents. Attempts to chloromethylate the iodo compounds failed.
