由丁醇和丙酸反应而得。将丙酸、丁醇和硫酸一起加热回流5h，冷后用碳酸钠中和至pH7-8，分去水层，用无水碳酸钾干燥，过滤分馏收集145-147℃为成品。精制方法：常含有游离丙酸和丁醇等杂质。用碳酸钠溶液中和后，用水、氯化钙溶液洗涤，无水碳酸钾干燥后精馏。
