稀土氧化物直接氯化法。制备无水氯化钐的常用方法是氯化铵氯化法和有碳存在下的氯气高温氯化法。氯化铵氯化法比较简单，只需将氯化铵混入氧化物原料中，无需专门的合成设备和控制装置。氯化温度也不太高。

将氯化铵按理论量的2~3倍与氧化钐混合均匀装入反应器，反应器可用玻璃或金属做成。然后放在电炉中加热。氯化温度为300~350℃时，氯化率接近100％，收率达90％以上。氯化时间与氯化料装载量及氯化反应器的结构有关。氯化温度过高与氯化时间过长都会降低氯化率。用氯化铵氯化得到的氯化钐含有过量的NH4Cl，可采取在空气中、真空中或在氯化氢气流中进行加热脱气的方法除掉。也可采用急速熔融方法除掉。

由氧化钐溶于盐酸，在水浴上蒸发、浓缩、冷却后析出六水合物结晶。
