Abstract

A previously unknown direction of Rieche reaction has been found: formylation of mesitylene, m-xylene, and durene with dichloromethyl methyl ether in the presence of aluminium trichloride and, to lesser extent, of titanium tetrachloride give the respective benzylidene dichlorides besides aldehydes.
