Abstract

In attempting to synthesize one of the isomers of the podophyllotoxin-picropodophyllin series I, we have prepared a substituted l-phenylnaphthalene (111) differing from podophyllotoxin or picropodophyllin only in that it has a naphthalene ring instead of a tetralin ring, is a methyl ester in-stead of a lactone, and is missing a hydroxymethyl group.
