Abstract
The pinacolisation of ketones is enhanced when a bivalent transition metal cation is present. This phenomenon is general and occurs with Cr2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Zn2+ but not with Ni2+. The cathodic reduction leads to α-glycols with a good yield, without any resin production, and at a less negative potential than that of the ketone itself.
