Abstract

The successful Friedel-Crafts acylations of 1 and 5 with acetyl and hexanoyl chloride demonstrate that eq 1 and 2 are general methods for securing C-3 and C-2 substituted perylenes in good yields. On the contrary, treatment of perylene with methyllithiumether in boiling benzene afforded little methylation (0.1-2.0 Ojo of a crystalline methylperylene)-16 Invariably 90-95% of the starting perylene was recovered.
