Abstract
I1 the appropriate N-halosuccinimide. Alternatively, when R1 was alkyl, the corresponding alkyl@-keto ester was available via in situ alkylation of the intermediate P-keto ester anion with RIX (X= Br, I) in yields superior to those involving standard conditions for alkylations of@-keto esters. 14
